Appaloosa Staff at the National Appaloosa Show

Welcome back!

There are many people involved in making the 61st National Appaloosa Show run smoothly in its first year in Jackson, Mississippi.

Pictured above is Mary Lou, who mans the Appaloosa both in the trade show.  She is there to answer questions about the Appaloosa breed and about the activities going on this week at the Show.  Show results are available from the office as the classes are completed.

Another busy individual, Merida McClanahan, talks with Mark Hardy in front of the Horse Travel Network booth in the trade show.  Merida is a busy lady this week, so when you see her she is usually not standing this still!

Steve Taylor, CEO of the ApHC is busy in and around the arenas, giving out awards, congratulating winners, talking to sponsors, and giving media interviews to name just a few of his activities this week.

Southern Tractor John Deere and Arena Werks

Southern Tractor John Deere tractors  pulling Arena Werks equipment rake the arenas between events.  Both Southern Tractor and Arena Werks are proud ApHC sponsors at the Appaloosa Youth World Show/61st National Appaloosa Show.

Besides the arenas in the Mississippi Coliseum and the Kirk Fordyce Equine Center, there are also several smaller arenas on the grounds of the Mississippi Fairground that must be worked throughout the show.

During the speed events, there actually may be more than one John Deere tractor in an arena at a time trying to get the ground back in shape for the competitors as quickly as possible.  They are doing a wonderful job keeping the ground worked up nicely so that all competitors can have an equal chance to show their abilities.

Camas Prairie Stump Race at National Appaloosa Show

Camas Prairie Stump Race  at the National Appaloosa Show was exciting to watch in the Kirk Fordyce Equine Center.  For those who have never heard of it, it is a form of matched barrel racing.

Two contestants run their horses on identical barrel patterns at the same time, and the fastest one across the finish line, without a foul wins.  A foul is levied when a horse tips a barrel, or if it crosses the score line before the green light at the beginning of the race.

The “control center” for the race is in the middle of the arena.  It gives a tone and then a few seconds later a green light to start the race.  Contestants start the pattern in the middle of the competitor’s barrel pattern and then race across the score line into their own barrel pattern.  Horses are running by each other in opposite directions at both the start and finish of the pattern.

At the end of the race, both competitors race toward the center to cross the finish line, as the crowd screams for their favorite.  It’s very exciting, and the horses are obviously pros because the excitement and confusion don’t seem to distract them from the course.

Appaloosa Most Colorful at Halter

The Appaloosa breed showed off it’s most colorful horses Saturday night in the Mississippi Coliseum during the ApHC 61st National Show.  What a variety of colors and patterns!  There were brightly spotted leopard appaloosas, and solid horses with the bright “blanket” of spots on their rumps.  One of the unusual patterns  even seemed to have stripes interspersed with the spots.

The class was judged on the merits of the horses and their coloring.  The horses winning the class were truly recommendations for the breed, with their gorgeous colors and good conformation. [tags] Appaloosa horses, Appaloosa color class, ApHC, National Appaloosa Show[/tags}

Appaloosa Youth World Trail Class

The 13-15 year old Youth Trail Class showed Saturday.  One of the competitors is pictured on the gate portion of the course.

The trail class is set up to be challenging for the competitors and their horses, while still being safe to navigate.  The riders have to be able to control their horse’s gait at each obstacle, side-pass and back as they turn and reverse their way through the course.

The horses that do well in this class are calm, and very well trained.  Their riders can control each leg and where it is placed.

He introduced the entertainment, and visiting celebrities, as well as announcing winners of the prize drawings.  It was non-stop giveaways, so he really got a workout!

Pictured here with Chad, is teen singing sensation Calloway.  Her performance was scheduled for Saturday night at the Mississippi Coliseum.

The Moonlight Madness promotion was held from 9 pm to 11 pm Friday night after the evening entertainment in the Coliseum.  The crowd attending the special trade show  session had a chance to win dozens of prizes donated by the vendors themselves, as well as 10 - $50 shopping sprees donated by the ApHC.

Moonlight Madness was well attended, and featured the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls on stage with a trick roping exhibition, as well as the trade show and prize drawings.
